And every year–rather than celebrating–we are forced to confront the obstacles that get in the way of women and their freedom\, including worsening statistics on gender-based violence; the under-representation of females in political leadership; and a climate emergency that disproportionately affects women and girls. In fact\, UN Women recently announced that  it will take another 286 years to close the global gender gap. From a “forever war” that women are barely surviving in Afghanistan to human rights abuses brought to light by girl-led protests in Iran\, gender equality around the world seems more elusive than ever.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-587994″ text_weight=”700″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″ sub_reduced=”yes” uncode_shortcode_id=”548355″]So what can we do? SUMMARY:Roe At 50: Abortion Access From Now On
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”0″ top_padding=”0″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_use_pixel=”yes” shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ el_class=”event-wc” column_width_pixel=”920″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”151937″]It’s been six months since the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade\, and we are living through a once-in-a-generation moment around reproductive freedom. We face a period of intense change and also intense confusion\, as misinformation continues to spread rapidly\, some of it intentionally propagated by anti-abortion groups. Each day brings a new development–from the FDA’s recent decision to expand access to medication abortion\, to news of more pregnant people being denied essential medical care because of near-total abortion bans in 13 states. \nSo where do we go next in 2023\, particularly when we know that it will be birthing people of color who will experience the most harm in this moment? \nOn Wednesday\, January 18th–just ahead of what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade—The Meteor will host Roe At 50: Abortion Access From Now On. This virtual briefing will feature leading advocates sharing their perspectives on the reproductive justice movement\, and mapping out what comes next in the fight for our freedom. You’ll learn: \n\nWhat we’re all getting wrong about abortion…and how we can fix it.\nHow the anti-abortion movement\, at its core\, has always been about upholding white supremacy.\nHow to find information and resources on where to get abortions right now.\nThe most valuable things that individuals can do to support the reproductive justice movement.\n\nWe’ll hear from the experts about both challenges and solutions\, including:  \n\nRenee Bracey Sherman\, founder & executive director of We Testify and co-author of the forthcoming book\, Countering Abortionsplaining\nBrittany Packnett Cunningham\, award-winning activist and the host of The Meteor’s feminist news podcast\, UNDISTRACTED\nModerator Regina Mahone\, senior editor at The Nation and co-author with Renee Bracey Sherman of Countering Abortionsplaining\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text border_color=”meteor-black” uncode_shortcode_id=”180568″ css=”.vc_custom_1673369639507{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}” border_color_type=”uncode-palette”]Please join The Meteor on Wednesday\, January 18th\, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. for this free briefing\, and spread the word—everyone is welcome to participate![/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ limit_content=””][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image media=”3049″ media_width_percent=”55″ alignment=”center” shape=”img-circle” advanced=”yes” media_overlay_opacity=”50″ media_image_coloration=”desaturated” media_image_anim=”no” media_padding=”2″ uncode_shortcode_id=”194534″][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”3/4″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-105988″ text_weight=”700″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″ uncode_shortcode_id=”209747″]Brittany Packnett Cunningham[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_column_text el_class=”desc-team” uncode_shortcode_id=”138825″]Brittany Packnett Cunningham is a leader at the intersection of culture and justice. What can we each do to protect voting rights in the year ahead? Please join The Meteor for One Year Till the Midterms: A Voting Rights Briefing on November 8\, 2021 at 6 pm ET to find out. The law will decimate access for close to 15 million Texans\, hitting women in Black\, Latinx\, and immigrant communities hardest. What’s more\, it includes a bounty-hunting scheme\, offering $10\,000 to anyone who successfully sues a doctor\, health center worker\, or other person helping someone obtain an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. \nAnd there are more battles to come. This has been the most hostile state legislative session in recent history for abortion rights\, with more than a dozen states poised to enact Texas-style laws. This fall\, the Supreme Court will hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization which explicitly asks the Court to overrule Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion. \nSo what can we each do about this bleak landscape? Come join our upcoming workshop After Texas: The Fight for Abortion Access on September 20\, at 5 pm ET\, to find out. Organized in partnership with the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) and moderated by Dahlia Lithwick of Slate\, the event will feature experts from the front lines: Amy Hagstrom Miller of Whole Woman’s Health Alliance\, part of the coalition to stop Senate Bill 8 (SB8); Jenny Ma\, one of the CRR attorneys representing the providers in the upcoming Supreme Court case; and Jessica Pinckney of Access Reproductive Justice in California. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nWe’ll learn: \n\nWhat Texas SB8 means for other states around the country\nWhat SCOTUS could do—and how you can make a difference\nProposed solutions to address this rollback\, including the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Department of Justice’s new lawsuit against Texas\n\nNo subject knowledge or organizing experience necessary—everyone is welcome! \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ limit_content=””][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image media=”2562″ media_width_percent=”55″ alignment=”center” shape=”img-circle”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”3/4″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-105988″ text_weight=”700″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″]Amy Hagstrom Miller[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_column_text el_class=”desc-team”]Amy Hagstrom Miller\, founder and president of Whole Woman’s Health and Whole Woman’s Health Alliance\, is a fierce advocate for women’s access to safe abortion care in Texas and throughout the country.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ limit_content=””][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/4″][vc_single_image media=”2479″ media_width_percent=”55″ alignment=”center” shape=”img-circle”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”3/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1607098711373{padding-right: 20px !important;}”][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-105988″ text_weight=”700″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″]Jenny Ma[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_column_text el_class=”desc-team”]Jenny Ma is a senior staff attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights and part of the legal team in the upcoming Supreme Court case that will determine the future of abortion care in states like Mississippi.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ limit_content=””][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image media=”2478″ media_width_percent=”55″ alignment=”center” shape=”img-circle”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”0″ override_padding=”yes” column_padding=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”3/4″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-105988″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″]Jessica Pinckney[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_column_text el_class=”desc-team”]Jessica Pinckney is the executive director of ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE\, a California-based community organization funding abortion and advocating for reproductive justice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ limit_content=””][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][vc_single_image media=”1876″ media_width_percent=”55″ alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” gutter_size=”0″ override_padding=”yes” column_padding=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”3/4″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h3″ text_font=”font-140965″ text_size=”fontsize-105988″ text_space=”fontspace-111466″]Dahlia Lithwick[/vc_custom_heading][vc_empty_space empty_h=”1″][vc_column_text el_class=”desc-team”]Dahlia Lithwick\, a founding member of The Meteor\, is a senior editor and columnist at Slate\, where she hosts the podcast “Amicus\,” about law and the Supreme Court. With a record number of recent conservative appointments to the federal judiciary and the most conservative Supreme Court we’ve seen in years\, plus a maternal health crisis that hits Black and brown women hardest\, there are critical priorities for the year ahead. \nTo understand the issues and learn how you can get involved\, join us for a workshop series with the Center for Reproductive Rights. You’ll hear from legal experts and grassroots organizers about what we all need to know now. \nIn The Meteor Fund’s first workshop\, hosted by Dahlia Lithwick of Slate with Fajer Saeed Ebrahim of the Center for Reproductive Rights\, and Michelle Wilson of Women Engaged\, we’ll cover topics like: \n\nWhat’s ahead in light of the new Supreme Court and the current political climate\nThe widespread state-level damage to abortion access—and possible solutions\nRecent reproductive rights legislative and policy changes\n\n  \nMost of all\, we’ll learn what we can each do to make a difference.
